Creative Memories: Remembering God’s Goodness with Layered Sand Bottles
You may have seen the initial steps of this fun layered sand treasure before. Today we are adding significance to each layer of sand as a remembrance for your children of all of the times God has answered prayers and come through as our loving Savior!
Crafting layered sand bottles is a visually stunning activity that allows you to unleash your creativity and create captivating pieces. This post was created to guide you through the step-by-step process of making beautiful sand layered bottles with the added touch of reflecting on God’s goodness in your family’s life.

Reflecting on God’s Goodness with Layered Sand
Throughout the Old Testament, we witness the profound power of reflecting on God’s goodness. Many did this through establishing memorials to commemorate significant events and encounters with Him throughout the family line.
One common way people in the Old Testament reflected on God’s goodness was through the construction of stone memorials set up for future generations. These physical structures served as tangible reminders of God’s faithfulness and mighty acts.
For example: After the crossing of the Jordan River, Joshua commanded the Israelites to set up twelve stones as a memorial, symbolizing God’s miraculous parting of the waters and leading them into the Promised Land (Joshua 4:1-9).

Many remembrances are appreciated by more than just those who witnessed the miracle. Joshua 4:21-22 explains that ‘In the future your children will ask, “What do these stones mean?” Then you can tell them, “This is where the Israelites crossed the Jordan on dry ground.”’ We are proclaiming His faithful goodness to future generations. Similarly, the remembrance stones in Gilgal reminded future generations of the God of miracles so that their faith would be renewed.
These reflections and memorials serve as powerful reminders of God’s faithfulness, deliverance, and provision. They bind our families together and encourage our future, relying on the strength of His hand. With His love in mind, let’s dive into this colorful memorial!

Layered Sand: Step-by-Step, Memory by Memory

Step 1: Prepare your workspace.
First, set up a clean and well-lit workspace. Then lay down some newspaper or a protective surface to catch any spilled sand and make for easy cleanup.
Step 2: Select your bottles and layered sand colors.

Next, choose the glass bottles or jars you would like to work with. Consider using bottles with interesting shapes or different sizes for added visual appeal. Select a variety of sand colors that complement each other and match your desired aesthetic.
Step 3: Start the first layer of sand.
Begin by pouring a thin layer of one colored sand into the bottle using a funnel or spoon. After that, gently tap the bottle to level the sand. Each layer of sand will signify God’s promises and how He has come through for us time and time again. The more time we spend with God over our lives, the more we see His faithfulness in every single season! How great Thou art!
Step 4: Add special elements.

Add specifically chosen elements to each layer. You could add a cross here to start with the foundation that Jesus is Lord and he ultimately showed His love for us by dying on the cross for our sins. A taller cross covers the many layers and signifies that His ultimate expression of love is finished. <3 That love can never be taken from us!
If your child would like to see the elements on the outside and not have them as a buried treasure, it may be easier to wrap yarn, a bracelet, or a thread around the outside and attach the meaningful trinkets in that way.

Let your children choose elements that remind them of certain Bible scriptures dear to their hearts or memories of times God showed up for them in a big way. After all, the Bible says we overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony.
Step 5: Layer sand and add meaningful parts.
Continue to layer colored sand into the bottle using a funnel or spoon, subsequently tapping the bottle gently in order to level the sand. Repeat this process with different colors, layering them one by one to create a beautiful gradient effect. Consider placing a painted wooden bead or memory/scripture stone at each level that holds significance to your child or family member. Alternate between colors and experiment with different patterns and thicknesses to achieve your desired treasure.

Step 6: Ask about memories and promises.
Together, with God’s faithfulness in mind, continue placing small shells, beads, or meaningful stones between the layers. You could also choose to set them aside to wrap on the yarn outside the jar at the end.
Enjoy this time with your family reflecting on times and memories when God has answered prayers or given unexpected blessings. You could place a bead with the beginning letter of each person’s name in your family. Also, ask your kids about things that mean a lot to their hearts. Additionally, you could ask them to pick out beads or stones that match Bible verses they hold dear personally. Alternatively, they could pick out small stones in the yard to wash, dry, and paint.
Example:
Paint a stone white or place a shell to remember the day I was washed clean and baptized into God’s kingdom. You could also ask them what the color of the sand reminds them of about God! For example, this could include colors reminding us of baptism, being washed clean, growth, renewal, special parts of God’s creation we enjoy, and more! This is a time of rejoicing and reflecting on God’s never-ending promises, love, and steadfastness.

Step 7: Anchor elements (optional).
Use a bamboo skewer or thin stick to carefully position the decorative elements and adjust their placement. When positioned as you like, secure them in place with a small amount of clear adhesive or glue, if necessary.
Step 8: Finish and seal the bottle.
Once you are satisfied with the sand layers and any added decorative elements, make sure the layers are settled by gently tapping the bottle on a flat surface. Next, clean any excess sand from the bottle’s rim and inner sides. To finish, carefully seal the bottle with its lid or cork to preserve the layers and prevent sand from shifting. Rejoice with your children that you have so many memories and scriptures to be thankful for from the past, and that you look forward to a bright future. We know in all things God works together for the good of those who love him, who are called according to His purpose!
Step 9: Embellish the bottle:
To add a finishing touch, you can tie a ribbon or twine around the bottle’s neck and attach meaningful pieces that were set aside earlier, or create a decorative tag with a personalized message or your family’s last name on it. Remember God’s love wrapping around your family.
“The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession…” Deuteronomy 7:6
